Cooperation-Agreement and data exchange between the TB Raab, LIFE EUROKITE & Swiss Ornithological Institute

Project title:

Cooperation-Agreement and data exchange between the TB Raab, LIFE EUROKITE & Swiss Ornithological Institute

Cooperation Partner:

Swiss Ornithological Institute

Contract duration:

March 2020 - January 2027

Raptor protection:

The agreement came into effect with the signing of the parties in March 2020 and will last until the completion of the red kite research projects (2027). The first data exchange has already taken place. The rights of use are listed in the contract and include, for example, scientific analyzes as part of the project "Cross-border protection of the Red Kite in Europe by reducing human-caused mortality (LIFE EUROKITE)" (LlFE18 NAT/AT000048). Any further use requires approval of the respective data owner.

The data exchange includes

  1. The complete movement data of young and adult Red Kites from the time of tagging to death or the respective time of the data transfer, in the maximum resolution.
  2. Information on the date of death and the causes of mortality, where available, for young and adult birds that have died with a transmitter.
  3. Measurement and sample data of the young and adult birds during the tagging (brood size, exact age, weight, feather length, wing length, feather or blood sample for sex determination, tarsus).
  4. The nest location (tagging) and nest location of settlement nest, if known.
  5. Breeding success data of the tagged breeding birds and the resettled young birds with transmitters, if known.

Characteristics / innovative Solution / Content:

The telemetry data exchanged currently includes 469 red kites from the Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach, 393 red kites from the LIFE EUROKITE project and 232 red kites from the TB Raab (as of July 30, 2021). The cooperation already ensures that those involved have access to telemetry and mortality data from more than 1,000 red kites for analysis. Red kites with new transmitters in the future are already recorded by the data exchange contract, so this data pool is constantly growing.
